Managing Your Boss

As long as you are working for someone, you will have a boss who is either a boss himself/herself or has a boss to manage as well.  Whether you like it or not, your boss perception of you affects your salary increment, promotion or even your job stability in the company.

You may have your own opinion and professional expertise on how the job should be done but if your boss does not value or agree with that what you are doing is what he/she wants, it will not go far...

Useful Tips
  • Understand your boss goals or priorities and help him meet his/her objectives.
  • Check that what you are doing is in line with your boss goals and expectations.
  • Understand your boss temperament, his/her likes and dislikes. Don't do things that he/she thinks there is no value.
  • Understand your boss preferred mode of feedback - does he/she wants to be updated of progress?  How much details does he/she needs?
  • Provide solutions when you highlight problems to your boss. Don't expect your boss to solve your problems.
  • Communicate with your boss in his/her preferred manner - does he/she prefers email, tele-conversation or in-person? Maintain good rapport with your boss.
  • Maintain good working relationship with colleagues. Resolve any relationship issues (if any) on your own.
  • Do your job well, build trust and delight your boss with exceptional performance.
By all means, keep your cool and discuss professionally with your boss when there are disagreements or issues to resolve. You don't want to be seen as an employee that gives your boss problems and headaches!

Well, if all things fail after you had tried your very best - it may not be the right fit, then it might be better to move on.

All the Best!
