As you move to mid life, do you worry about job security like can you keep your job till retirement? Or if you are not employed, the challenges and uncertainty of finding a suitable job? Can you still take the demands of the job?
Alternatively, you might be one of the lucky ones who have the financial ability to stop working to lead the life of retiree now? A second career in accordance to your passion and interest ?
Why work after age 50 years?
- to earn an income, sole provider to maintain living for self and/or family.
- to be independent, supplement income or reduce burden to your children.
- to feel a sense of self worth, continue to contribute to society.
- to remain mentally alert, avoiding age-related diseases such as dementia.
- ..... whatever is your reason, you name it.
How to remain employable?
We cannot stop natural ageing nor remained forever young, but you can overcome general perceptions of old employees as "burden or overpriced".
Useful Tips ("HEART") :
H - Healthy Living ~ exercise and eat healthy to avoid or manage any chronic diseases. Prevention is better than cure, avoid high medical costs that employer frown upon.
E - Emotional Intelligence (EQ) ~ practise EQ in dealing with people to build relationships. You might become "young at heart" as you mingle more with younger generations and understand their thoughts.
A - Add Value ~ on top of your job description, add value to your boss and/or colleagues with your experience and expert knowledge. Offer to help whenever you can.
R - Relevance ~ read up and constantly get updated of new knowledge to stay relevance on the job.
T - Team Player ~ engage and try to fit in with your team. Respect different views and be flexible to accept new ideas and ways of doing things.
Of course, nobody can assure you a job nor predict what will happen in future. Business may fail overnight for various reasons or things may just go wrong despite your best efforts. For the least, above "HEART" tips will motivate you towards a positive outlook. Bosses like employees with positive outlook thus you stand a better chance of staying employed or being shortlisted in your job hunt!
